Fishing has its intrinsic values; writers ruminate and poets ponder those values, yet every angler knows them. Economic studies make it clear that fishing is valuable in a very real and measurable way. From my perspective, I am glad to stand in league with anglers that drive this economic engine; healthy habitats and healthy fish lead to healthy people and healthy economies.

50 weeks, 15 species, $25,000! Fish year-round from anywhere in the Champlain Basin.
Each year Lake Champlain International (LCI) hosts a variety of fishing derbies on Lake Champlain and the surrounding basin waters. As America's largest celebration of family, friends, and fishing, these events offer big fun and bigger prizes - no matter what your ability or what species you like to target. Our flagship event, the Father's Day Derby, covers 11 species and puts more than $150,000 in cash and prizes on the line. Participants of all ages and abilities can fish from boat or shore for prizes that include cash payouts in 7 categories, a Junior Angler Division, LCI Ladies of the Lake award, Angler of the Year competitions, and much more. Our 50-week Champlain Basin Derby, which pays out more than $25,000 for 15 species, brings year-round competitive fishing to all legal, public waters across the 8,600 square mile Champlain Basin. We also host a free, kids-only Little Anglers Derby as well as a two-person Bass Open in the fall.
Each event plays two roles. First, they are fundraisers for our year-round efforts to keep Lake Champlain clean, healthy, and full of fish. Not only are they fun for the whole family, but all proceeds go back to the angler as prizes, or allow us to fight to make sure your right to healthy water is fulfilled. You can feel good knowing that your registration and time on the water is actively helping ensure its future. You can learn more about our programs and efforts here.
The second role is to simply show people how wonderful the lake is in the hopes that they will do their part to take care of it. The strongest stewards for a resource are those who have a personal connection to it. The LCI Derbies bring together thousands of people on Lake Champlain where they experience first-hand what a special and important place this is. Each angler is left with a life-long, cherished memory. It is these memories that translate to a respect and appreciation for the lake, which in turn translates to stewardship for the lake. When called upon, these people will be the ones to fight and advocate to keep Lake Champlain swimmable, drinkable, and fishable for everyone.
